Black History Month 2026
Africa Centre is proud to celebrate Black History Month this February.
Since 2017 in Alberta and nationally since 1995, Black History Month (BHM) has been observed annually to honour the legacy, achievements, and contributions of Black people in Canada and their communities.
This year, the Government of Canada commemorates Black History Month under the theme “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” The theme marks three decades of Black History Month in Canada and recognizes the impact of Black Canadians across generations.
The City of Edmonton's 2026 theme, “Hidden Histories and Bold Futures,” invites us to reflect on the past while working toward the possibilities ahead.
As we honour the legacy of those who came before us and look ahead to the future, Africa Centre remains committed to fostering connections and supporting initiatives that celebrate excellence within African, Caribbean, and Black communities across Western Canada.
Black History Month Initiative Fund
The Black History Month Initiative Fund, a partnership between Africa Centre, the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) and Edmonton Heritage Council (EHC), supports African, Caribbean, and Black-led organizations in raising awareness, sharing stories and celebrating their heritage.
In 2026, the fund will support 23 community-led events, continuing to foster connections, amplify diverse voices and empower the next generation.
