Black History Month 2025

Africa Centre is proud to celebrate Black History Month this February.
Our theme this year, “Acknowledging the Past and Advocating for Change,” reflects the need to honour the history, struggles and achievements of African descent communities while actively working toward a more equitable future. This month is both a reflection on the resilience and contributions of African descent communities and a call to action to amplify their voices across Canada.
Aligned with the national theme, “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations,” this year’s commemoration recognizes the lasting impact of Black Canadians.
“Our mission focuses on honouring the resilience and contributions of African descent communities year-round,” said Sam Juru, Africa Centre’s Executive Director. “With so many community experiences across the country this year, let’s come together to recognize the significant contributions of African descent communities in the arts, education, innovation and beyond.
As recognition and participation in Black History Month continue to grow, Africa Centre remains committed to fostering connections and supporting initiatives that highlight excellence within African descent communities across Western Canada.
Black History Month Initiative Fund
A key part of this year’s celebrations is the Black History Month Initiative Fund, a partnership between Africa Centre, the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) and Edmonton Heritage Council (EHC). This fund supports organizations and groups of African descent in raising awareness, sharing stories and celebrating their heritage.
In 2025, the fund will support more than 28 community-led events—continuing to foster connections, amplify diverse voices and empower the next generation.
We invite everyone to take part, engage with the community and celebrate Black leadership—past, present and future—across Canada.
