Disrupting Inequities in
Settlement for Black Newcomer Women
Initiatives to Address Settlement Inequities
As part of our Enhancing Gender Equity program, we have undertaken new systems change project titled - Disrupting Inequities in Settlement for Black Newcomer Women, funded by the Federal Department of Women and Gender Equality (WAGE). This initiative officially began in August 2024.
Black immigrant women and girls who are newcomers to Canada grapple with a unique set of challenges and issues that are shaped by their intersecting identities as women, immigrants, and people of African descent. Through this 31-month systemic change project, Africa Centre will help advance Black women’s economic security and prosperity through systemic change.
By merging the voices of grassroots advocates with those of policymakers, we aim to combine theory and practice and provide strategies to disrupt systemic inequities. Black Immigrant Women and Girls, along with their support networks, will actively identify inequitable policies and practices in the settlement process. The insights gathered will inform policy change recommendations and advocacy efforts with decision-makers.
Rooted in Strength: A Capacity Building Conference
Held in Calgary on March 15 and Edmonton on March 22, 2025, this full-day event brought together more than 40 cohort participants to network, learn, and build capacity through engaging discussions, expert speakers, and shared experiences. Hosted by the Enhancing Gender Equity Program, the forum also celebrated International Women’s Day by honouring the contributions of newcomer women and strengthening support systems across communities.
