Enhancing Gender Equity

Enhancing-Gender-Equity-header

Africa Centre views advancing gender equity and the empowerment of women and girls as a priority. As a result, gender equity plays a key role in creating lasting solutions to our communities.

We intend to build coalitions of support to advance the lives of our community by addressing gender-based disadvantages while tapping the existing resources within our communities and partners. The approaches include:

  • Building coalitions of partnerships to promote women’s empowerment;

  • Collaborating with academics in exploring initiatives that address gender issues among women of African descent; and,

  • Create support systems that promote women in leadership.

Our goal is to implement a framework that creates systemic change in the lives of African descent individuals and families experiencing Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), family and marital breakdown, unemployment/underemployment, and mental health concerns by March 2024.

The key developers in partnership are the University of Alberta, PACE and Africa Centre addressing this goal from the academic research (macro) and community (micro) viewpoints in African descent communities living within Alberta. We are honored to have this vital research and initiative funded by the Women and Gender Equality of Canada. This research and information will inform the key stakeholders in the working group who comprise of community leaders and agencies providing front-line supports in the areas of IPV and mental health services.

The working group’s key objective is to develop core materials for program and service providers, program recipients and evaluate the progress, gaps and/or obstacles within the newly established framework between May 2022 to March 2024. This framework will be developed through a series of working group workshops which will include case studies, group discussions, review of research and data, and through the application of shared knowledge and practices that currently have a positive impact in African descent communities.

These steps combined, will create a comprehensive macro and micro level framework to address, implement, and reduce the occurrences of IPV, mental health crisis, family and marital breakdown, and unemployment/underemployment in Alberta’s African descent communities by March 2024: thus, resulting in positive systemic change in Alberta.
