Edmonton Edmonton Refugee & Emerging Community (EREC) Awards
About the Scholarship
The Edmonton Refugee & Emerging Community (EREC) Scholarship provides financial support ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 to help individuals pursue post-secondary education or obtain employment in their chosen field.
The EREC Scholarship Fund was established at the Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) to enhance the quality of life for refugees and members of emerging communities living in the greater Edmonton area.
In 2026, Africa Centre and ECF established a partnership to manage and deliver the EREC Scholarship initiative. To support its implementation, Africa Centre works closely with members of emerging communities through a Scholarship Advisory Committee.
Who We Serve
The goal of this initiative is to support the educational goals and aspirations of families from emerging communities.
In this context, “Emerging Community” refers to people who are immigrants, refugees, or from families with immigrant or refugee backgrounds who share a common cultural, national, or ethnic identity.
Barriers may include but are not limited to:
- Poverty
- Unemployment
- Limited English language skills
- Lower levels of formal education or job training
- Limited access to mainstream services and resources
Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship award you must meet the following criteria:
- A member of an emerging community.
- A resident of the greater Edmonton area and able to provide their social insurance number in order to receive their award. Please note: International Students are not eligible for this award.
- Attending a school in the greater Edmonton area, or intending to attend a school in the greater Edmonton.
Program of study must lead to a recognized undergraduate, professional, or applied degree, a diploma, or certificate. Academic upgrading, college preparation, after degrees, graduate programs, and international students are ineligible.

Applications close: June 1, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. (MDT)
What documents do I need to provide?
- A Letter of Reference in support of your application. This can be from a current or past employer, a volunteer contact, a board member, or another person who knows about your community and/or employment involvement. The letter must outline your past involvement and anticipated future involvement. Preference is given to professional/formal letters.
- Before an award is confirmed, recipients must provide proof of enrollment in the program of choice.
