Seniors Well-being & Engagement
A Program Rooted in Community Wisdom and Cultural Identity
African worldviews understand aging as a journey woven through community, spirituality, shared responsibility, and the transmission of knowledge from generation to generation. Many seniors coming to Canada find this journey disrupted — families are dispersed, cultural practices shift, and social networks fragment. The Seniors Well-being & Engagement Program restores these connections by creating spaces where seniors are seen, heard, valued, and supported.

The program is grounded in research showing that newcomer and immigrant older adults often experience lower levels of life satisfaction due to social marginalization, poverty, health challenges, and difficulty accessing services. For African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) seniors, racial discrimination, technology exclusion, and cultural dislocation add to this vulnerability. The program builds environments that promote healing, belonging, cultural continuity, empowerment, and active engagement.
The program has become one of Edmonton's key hubs for ACB elder empowerment, offering comprehensive, culturally grounded senior support, including:
-
Digital literacy and technology mentorship
-
Wellness, fitness, and mental health programs
-
Cultural arts, storytelling, and social gatherings
-
Intergenerational learning
-
System navigation and advocacy
-
Financial literacy and elder safety education
-
Excursions and community field trips
-
A culturally safe space where seniors feel seen, valued, and connected
