    Formative years

The program’s earliest years focused on social gatherings, cultural events, informal support, and offering a safe space for older adults experiencing isolation. Activities were grassroots and community-led, forming the foundation upon which today’s multi-stream programming was built.

    The Digital Transformation Begins

The Seniors Digital Connections Project marked a turning point. COVID-19 intensified loneliness, anxiety, and isolation among seniors — especially those unfamiliar with technology. At a time when essential services, health appointments, and family communication moved online, many older adults were left behind.

This project not only taught seniors to use devices but also created virtual spaces where they could reconnect with peers, access information, and stay emotionally supported. Seniors received laptops, one-on-one mentoring, and culturally tailored workshops that honored their learning styles and pace. More than 100 seniors completed certificates, strengthening confidence and independence.

    Intergenerational and Cultural Renewal

The Intergenerational Inspirations Project re-centred elders as cultural teachers. Based on the African understanding that “When an elder dies, a library burns,” the project aimed to close the growing gap between seniors and youth. Research shows that age segregation increases loneliness among seniors and negative stereotypes in younger generations. Bringing the two groups together created opportunities for storytelling, music, cooking, dance, and cultural sharing.

These interactions offered seniors renewed purpose and visibility, while youth gained a deeper connection to their heritage, strengthened communication skills, and a sense of responsibility to their community. Activities were planned with seniors, not for them, ensuring empowerment, autonomy, and leadership.

Expanding Digital Skills, Social Wellness, and Outdoor Experiences

While digital literacy continued, the program expanded into wellness initiatives, arts, cultural activities, and social outings. Field trips to the Alberta Legislature, Fort Edmonton Park, Valley Zoo, Art Gallery of Alberta, and provincial parks offered seniors opportunities to explore their city and maintain an active lifestyle. These experiences nurtured physical health, reduced isolation, and strengthened friendships.

The program also partnered with organizations such as Aya Knowledge Collective and Orchesis Dance Society to bring African drumming, dance, and storytelling workshops to the Centre. These sessions allowed seniors to connect movement, memory, rhythm, and identity, drawing on African knowledge systems to support emotional, spiritual, and social well-being.

Fit Over Fifty and Healthy Aging Programming

Recognizing the deep connection between physical activity, belonging, and mental health, the program introduced Fit Over Fifty, a culturally grounded physical wellness and meditation program. Research on newcomer seniors highlights the importance of reinforcing collective identity and providing spaces where older adults can move, breathe, and heal together. Workshops on positive aging, mental well-being, nutrition, and active living further supported a holistic understanding of health.

    Financial Literacy, Empowerment, and Safety

The latest chapter in the program focuses on strengthening seniors’ financial stability and protecting them from exploitation. Topics such as budgeting, accessing benefits, remittances, fraud prevention, and financial power of attorney are offered through culturally relevant workshops. This work also addresses the rising concern of elder financial abuse, ensuring seniors know their rights and can recognize warning signs early.
