Digital Literacy
We live in an increasingly digital world — one that is quickly evolving, one that did not exist when today’s seniors were in school and the workforce. Technological access and digital literacy skills are now essential for:
- Health care
- Social engagement
- Safety (fraud prevention)
- Independence

The COVID-19 pandemic created a crisis of isolation. Seniors became even more disconnected as in-person events disappeared and essential services moved online. Research showed:
- Over two-thirds of adults experienced isolation during the pandemic.
- Seniors — especially racialized seniors — were disproportionately affected.
- Digital exclusion prevented access to health care, information, and social connection.
Starting in 2022 with the Seniors Digital Connections Project, digital empowerment is now a permanent program pillar, combatting isolation, supporting mental well-being, and bridging the digital divide.
Activities and Supports:
- Virtual social sessions
- Culturally paced digital literacy classes
- Laptop loan program
- One-on-one technical support
- Community Connectors (senior volunteers) conducting outreach
Digital literacy is a gateway to independence and strengthened mental health. For many seniors, this program is the first time they have operated a computer, video-called family, or accessed online health services. In this program, seniors learn not just how to use devices, but how to navigate the digital world safely and confidently.
Identified Needs Driving Program Growth
Research and direct experience revealed key gaps:
- Many seniors lacked access to devices or reliable internet.
- Seniors in community housing exhibited high digital disconnection.
- Immigrant seniors faced language barriers and digital illiteracy simultaneously.
- Social isolation worsened when seniors could not join digital spaces.
These insights guided the next phase: restoring connection through culture and community.
