Navigation Support & Advocacy

Seniors-Wellbeing-&-Engagement-header

The program ensures African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) seniors have a voice at decision-making tables and are represented in broader seniors’ networks. The program also offers assistance with navigating legal and social supports, and valuable support and advocacy during difficult family or system interactions.

You Don’t Have to Navigate the System Alone

For newcomer and immigrant seniors, navigating Canada’s systems — health care, housing, immigration, income supports, legal services, and more —can feel like learning a new language while standing in a maze. Cultural values around privacy, authority, and family can also make it hard to ask for help. Our team understands these realities. We create a safe, judgement-free space where seniors can ask questions, get clear answers, and be supported — not just pointed in a direction, but walked there.

What We Do

We provide hands-on, culturally grounded navigation support including:

  • Helping seniors understand and access government benefits, health services, and community resources.

  • Accompanying or connecting seniors to legal aid, housing supports, and social services.

  • Providing advocacy during difficult family situations, medical appointments, or interactions with institutions.

  • Connecting seniors to professional referrals when specialized help is needed.

  • Ensuring ACB senior voices are represented at community and decision-making tables.

  • Participating in broader seniors’ networks and coalitions to influence policy and programming.

Hello Seniors at Africa Centre

Help is closer than you think.

Africa Centre is proud to partner with the Hello Seniors program — a city-wide outreach initiative delivered by the Edmonton Seniors Coordinating Council — to bring free, one-on-one support directly to our seniors, where they are. A Hello Seniors Outreach Worker visits Africa Centre on a regular basis so seniors can access personalized help without having to travel across the city.

An Outreach Worker can help you:

  • Navigate systems like transportation and housing.

  • Fill out forms for pensions and government benefits.

  • Connect to community resources across Edmonton.

  • Get information about classes, workshops, recreational programming, food access, and more.
