Responding to high levels of chronic illness, trauma histories, and physical deconditioning among African newcomer seniors, this program promoted holistic well-being.

Exercise and Meditation Program (2024)

Rationale:

  • African cultures see individuals as part of a communal, mind-body-spirit system.

  • Health improves when movement, connection, and culture align.

  • Physical activity reduces disease risk, cognitive decline, and anxiety.

 

Program Highlights:

  • Weekly exercise sessions in parks, gyms, and recreation centres.

  • Meditation and breathing for grounding.

  • Healthy cooking and nutritional workshops.

  • Group conversations about aging positively.

 

Anticipated Outcomes:

  • Stronger physical health.

  • Better mobility.

  • Increased cultural belonging.

  • Strengthened community relationships.
